Afterword

Witches and Wolves was a crazy project to write. It somehow worked out perfectly in an incredible feat of luck. I had the support of so many friends and family members that allowed me to pursue this dream I had of making a web series even though I knew it probably wouldn’t be successful enough to sustain me. I also somehow managed to post on every day I meant to, which is also just so, so lucky that nothing happened other than getting a lil sick a few times.

If you read through the whole thing, I can’t thank you enough. That kind of commitment is rare and it fuels me to continue doing this thing that I love so much.

I’ve put a few short stories out into publications over the years, but this is the first big thing I’ve ever written and released. I think I grew a lot as a writer as the story progressed and I think it is very evident in the kind of characters I was writing and the things I chose to give focus to. That’s a whole ‘nother can of worms, in such a big story, it still feels like there was so little time to explore everything I wanted to while still moving the story along at a good pace. I suspect some readers will think the story was moving too fast or too slow and I actually agree with both opinions at times.

Here’s the big thing I wanted to talk about though. I started hormone replacement therapy in late 2024. Shortly after, in January 2025, I quit the job I had and started writing and releasing Witches and Wolves. Around that same timeframe, I started the terrifying and wonderful journey of discovering who I was as a transgender woman.

I’m curious how obvious it was to my readers what was going on with Nick. When I was first writing drafts of Witches and Wolves back in university, I definitely didn’t understand what Nick was going through. 

Nick’s journey and my own overlapped in some ways and completely diverged in others. If there’s one thing I relate to Nick the most, it’s that shutting off my brain and just doing always felt easier than sitting with my feelings. It took a long time beforehand for me to admit to myself what I was truly feeling.

But one of the things I was now doing was writing and so parts of my soul escaped into the pages and I could, in a way, look into the past after forming some distance so that I could analyze all the tumultuous chaos that was in my heart.

Sage and I are in a happier place now, two years later. Witches and Wolves was a big part of that.

And now on to the next story! 

It seemed appropriate for my next project to be about a trans woman who was deeper into her transition, where the focus is more on how other people view her rather than how she views herself. I also have a bit of a chip on my shoulder to a certain well known magic academy story. It is of course, a little vain to be writing anything and comparing it to one of the most successful book series of all time, and I assure you that it’s not an on-the-nose ripoff. Rather, just like WnW was an exploration of the fear of change and identity, Starcaller is an exploration of navigating systems that aren’t built for you and how a community can carve out a place to be yourself within a hostile world.

Starcaller is a magic academy story with horror elements. Umbriel, our transfem protagonist, goes to the most prestigious Star Calling school where everyone is rich and influential except for her. She meets Dara, a non-binary honors student who she tries her best to befriend… or maybe more? If only the dark secret hidden in the depths of Knowsoth Academy wouldn’t get in the way of a budding romance.

Starcaller is available on my patreon, with the first chapter currently being free. Chapters will not be releasing as frequently as Witches and Wolves did, as the structure of the chapters will be different, designed for regular novel pacing as opposed to the serial “TV episode style” releasing. My plan is to write with the intention of traditional publication and if that doesn’t pan out, I’ll do ebook self-publishing.

What first drew me to web series is the community aspect of them, so please, leave me a comment about whatever! I promise I read all of them and I am open to changing my strategy for writing if I receive feedback from my fans.
